i coined a new phrase today…
“i’m on it… like brown on brown rice.”
it has a latin charm to it, eh?
…or should it be spanish rice? which one is funnier?
forget the joneses.
all they care about is money and the accumulation of “stuff”. and what’s so fun about that? ok, maybe that’s an unfair question to an american audience (and to myself for that matter)… but if i were to keep up w a family, i think i’d rather keep up with the jetsons.
the jetsons of marketing.
from books to blogs, podcasts to webcasts, linkedin to twitter… the jetsons are all over it! they are happy, friendly, tech-savvy, and collaborative… they will network your face off and they are always looking to adopt… and that’s where i come in.
jason, liz, and andy are movers, shakers and overall just “making it happen” in the marketing world. in the words of nelly, our country grammar expert, “lemme in now, lemme in now… bill gates, donald trump, lemme in now”
oh, and let’s not forget that george jetson works a mere 3 hours a day, 3 days a week… granted, that’s still more than timothy ferris suggests, but i have a feeling that work and play are most often one in the same for these folks. and so it shall be with me.
i had 3 interviews in chicago. they were all with great companies. they all paid well. they all could have been strategic career moves… and yet, something wasn’t right. only half of me was excited… the weenie half. other half, the brazen half, pouted.
grrr! what, jen? what’s the problem? isn’t this what you wanted? to be successful in corporate america? won’t that be safe? won’t that be comfortable? won’t that be easiest?
perhaps. but it’s not enough anymore because…
“there’s no scarcity of opportunity to make a living at what you love. there is only a scarcity of resolve to make it happen.”
~wayne dyer
oh snap, wayne. throwing down the challenge… i like it!
after all if i’m going to be a weenie, and play small, i should at least know myself well enough to call it what it is… at least be honest… but lucky for me i don’t have to have that conversation w myself… i will not “go gentle into that good night.”
i’m no weenie, wayne. not by a longshot.
i guess i just don’t know what i love…yet.
this is the email i sent to a marketing company in chicago. the CEO wrote a book that i thought was awesome and the open position (vp of events) made me wiggle in my chair with glee!
in the past, when it came to my career, i tried to be what i thought they wanted… which was usually smaller than i am. but now… i’m just me… and it feels fan-freakin-tastic!
here it is, in it’s entirety. the names have been hidden because… umm, it just feels like the right thing to do.
******************************
dear p*** and a***,
happy wednesday!
i have a well written cover letter that i have included that may serve me better in applying, but my gut says “go for it”… so here it is…
i want this job. at a minimum, i would like the chance talk about it. i believe it was made for me. not just the title of it… the whole ball of wax! oh yeah! ahem… allow to me to explain with the top 7 reasons this opportunity makes me squeal in delight…
1. the company! the philosophy, the heart, the honesty… geez, there must be a bunch of little “me”s running around over there. i want to meet you ALL and be a part of that burning passion! making people happy is my life’s purpose too!
2. “events” is my middle name! jen “events” knoedl. yep. everyone is asking when my “moving to chicago (and landing a sweet job w g***) party” is going to take place… they know it’s gonna be off the hook! i’ll take pictures if you can’t make it.
3. i am an eager employee! guess what book will NOT be in the checked bag when i board the plane? …and i may even wear all black so that the yellow book jacket really “pops”!
4. location! i have lived in austin my entire life. it’s a great city and i love it… and it’s time to go. i’ve visited many places, but chicago and i fell in love at once! last summer i decided that i would move to downtown chicago in the spring… and wouldn’t you know it… it’s spring.
5. i have a lot heart! …and you value, want and appreciate that, i can tell…
6. i am in chicago today and for about a week! …and you need someone yesterday. what perfect timing! i would like the chance to save the day. (have cape. will fly.)
7. “silly stunt” attached! this picture is from my summer visit to chicago… trust me, this ball turned into word of mouth marketing in minutes. (please ignore the “do you know how i know you’re gay?” movie quote… it was an “inside” joke)
so there you have it. and there’s plenty more where that came from…
might we have an interview? por favor? i am available all day thursday, saturday, sunday, monday. i fly back home tuesday so i hope that this timing agrees with your schedule. if, because you are too busy making the world a better place, and you are only able to squeak in 15 minutes… tell me where to be and how you like your coffee. i’ll make it happen.
andy says if i’m not blogging, i’m thinking about it too hard. it’s like he knows me or something.
so there it is… first external post.
feels good.
